If you are thinking RYO might be for you, but just don't know where to start, it's as simple as 1,2,3 to get started on the road to stuffing your own filtered cigarettes.
Here's what you'll need to get started:
1. INJECTOR
Crank style injectors are the most popular type. For a very nominal price($20-50), there are many machines that will enable most people to make a pack of cigarettes in under 10 minutes. These durable machines typically will make 1000's of cigarettes before needing to be repaired or replaced. Hand injectors are an inexpensive($5-10) option, but they can be frustrating and tedious to use. Electric injectors are rapidly improving, but reliability/consistency issues are still prevalent and the cost is still fairly high for the ones that actually work well. Please see our injector forum for more info and to ask any questions or share your opinions.
2. TOBACCO
An exorbitant tax increase on "cigarette" tobacco was enacted on 4-1-09. Many companies responded to this draconian increase by modifying the cut of their "cigarette" tobacco to a larger cut. This action permitted them to label the product as "pipe" tobacco, which is taxed at a significantly lower rate than "cigarette" tobacco. "Cigarette" tobacco is still manufactured and sold, but there are now fewer choices than there were prior to 4/09.
Right now you're probably saying: "That's really exciting. Now tell me what I'm supposed to buy!!!!"
Everything that is labeled as "cigarette" tobacco is ready to be stuffed and smoked. There are numerous pipe tobacco's that are also ready to be used just like "cigarette" tobacco, but you will need to do some research, as the manufacturer's obviously can't tell you on their packaging that their "pipe" tobacco is suitable for cigarette usage. Your local tobacco retailer may be able to help you with your "pipe" selections. An even better resource can be found right here in our tobacco forums. Your friends in the Roll Your Own Resource community have a considerable wealth of tobacco knowledge, and they welcome your questions and your opinions.

3. TUBES
The typical box of tubes will cost $2-4 and contain 200 empty filtered cigarette tubes. One very important distinction is that tubes purchased in the U.S. do not contain the controversial FSC glue strips that are used in the paper of a commercially made cigarette. Filtered tube selection consists of “Ultra-Slim Kings”, “King-sized” and “100's”. While tubes are no longer marketed as being "full flavor, "light, etc, there are tubes that fit any profile ranging from "Full Flavor" to "Ultra-light". Mentholated tubes are available, but varieties are limited. For assistance with selecting the tube that is right for you, please stop by our cigarette tube forum.
